We all have bad days from time to time. While those days are never any fun, what really matters is how they are handled. A person who gives into the bad days with a sour-puss mood is likely to fall into a deep spiral of bleak days. However, a person who finds little ways to brighten even the darkest of days will probably find that their grey days are few and far between.

Pick Up a New Book

Reading is a wonderful way to escape the world’s harsh realities for a while. If you are having a particularly rough day, you might find that an enchanting fiction novel based in a far-off place is just what you need to bring your spirits back up. Why not give it a try? A trip to the library is easy enough to make, and borrowing a book or two doesn’t cost anything, so there is very little to lose.

 

Take a Walk

Sometimes a lack of vitamin D can really pull a person down in the dumps. If you find yourself in a series of dreary days—especially if you have spent little time in the sun—it might be time to get outside and soak up some of that D vitamin.

A walk is the perfect way to get in those much-needed rays and boost your spirits through exercise at the same time. As an added bonus, any wildflowers you find along the way can be used to brighten your kitchen table and add a bit more colour to your world.

 

Bake a Cake

We have all heard that comfort food is a wonderful form of medicine. Next time you are feeling down, why not give this theory a try? Whip up a cake or some cookies and sit with them as they bake and release their wonderful aroma into the air. Once baked, sit and slowly indulge in their goodness.

Are you trying to lose weight or eat healthier? No problem! There are plenty of healthy comfort foods out there too. Try finding a simple veggie casserole recipe to use in place of the cake or cookies, and you’ll be in business.

 

Get Snuggly

Occasionally, a person just needs to wrap up in a warm blanket, get comfortable in their favourite chair, and cuddle with someone they love. This might mean catching the cat for a quick snuggle, or it could mean subjecting a family member to a few minutes of hugging. Either way, it will likely leave you feeling much more able to take on the day.

 

Pay It Forward

Sometimes the best way to find happiness is to give happiness. Choosing to put something beautiful into the world—even on the less-than-awesome days—is a wonderful way to ensure that beauty comes right back to you. For this reason, it is often a good idea to use off days as a reminder to volunteer for a good cause, pay for a stranger’s lunch, or help an elderly person onto the bus. Not only will you feel better about the world after doing so, the people you helped will also have a brighter outlook in things.

 

As you can see, there are plenty of easy and inexpensive ways to treat a bad day and turn it around. Next time you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, skip the sulking and try one of these techniques to see if you can make a bad day better.
