21 Day Self Care Challenge - Day Three

Hey lovely person!

How did you sleep last night? Better hopefully, but keep it up!

Today’s task will also help with your sleep, because today I’m going to share with you one of the most simple and effective ways to reduce stress and feel better – a walk.

Yes, a walk! Easy peasy, hey?

Let’s face it, a lot of self care practices you’ll:

Already know and aren’t exactly rocket science – but that doesn’t mean you actually get out there and do them!

That’s what this challenge is all about, trying these things and testing what they feel like, and what’s best for you.

Walking is free, takes no special equipment and is great for any fitness level.

A walk in or around nature is best, but to increase its effectiveness let’s incorporate some mindfulness techniques too.

Now if you don’t know what mindfulness is (where have you BEEN – it’s everywhere!!), it’s all about being fully present in the moment, the here and now. Not going over past events, and not worrying about the future, just taking in and appreciating everything in the moment.

So on your walk, turn off your phone and use all your senses:

What do you see around you – trees, flowers, insects, people cars….

What can you hear: the sound of birds, the rustle of the wind in the trees, the sound of children playing…

Become aware of what you can feel: The sun on your face, the wind in your hair, the feel of your footsteps on the ground…

What can you smell? The flowers, the grass, the trees, the hot dog stand, a persons perfume as they pass…

Can you taste anything? Maybe the rain, or sea spray…

Become aware of your body.  Maybe you’re getting warmer, or you’re aware of your breath, your heartbeat, the feel of your feet on the ground.

We often live our lives on a ‘head’ level, thinking, reasoning, worrying.  Getting in touch with yourself, your body and your world is incredibly beneficial.

Exercise has been proven effective at raising a low mood.

Walking doesn’t have to be a solitary activity.

When you get home, don’t forget to write in your journal about the experience.

Happy walking!  And remember, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing!
